Oraciones de Tres Madres was conceived from prayers by my mother, grandmother, and aunt, who raised me in Colombia. After relocating to the United States with my father, distance introduced a rupture later deepened by my grandmother’s death from Covid-19 in 2021. Oraciones honors spiritual devotion and the bonds that endure despite absence, reimagining communication through a requiem shaped by sound and the purifying, ephemeral qualities of fire.
The prayers, recorded in 2019 as offerings of protection, are played on cassette tapes and interwoven with ambient recordings as I ignite flames, accompanied by Marc Lochner on the bouzouki. The ceremony unfolds through light, shadow, and improvised choreography, amplifying the collective emotional presence in the room.
