Basement Scene was presented as part of Ser Serpas’ solo exhibition at the Bourse de Commerce, combining her impromptu installations of found domestic objects with a series of performative actions. Developed through a collaborative process that welcomed the performers’ input, the project resulted in two distinct performances in September 2023 and January 2024. For the latter, I contributed a monologue from Isabelle Adjani’s characters in Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession (1981), invoking a shared lineage of horror cinema that has deeply informed both Serpas’ practice and my own. The recital evolved into a symphony of improvised vocals, unfolding in tandem with Serpas’ unpredictable DJ set and the volatile transformation of the installation. Collectively, we arrived at a glorious chaos, as I adorned the disintegration of the set with layered wailing, howls, and chants.
