Presented as part of Ser Serpas’ solo exhibition at the Bourse de Commerce, Basement Scene merged the artist’s customary approach to impromptu installations made of found household objects and furniture, with various performative actions.

Serpas shared her concept and methodologies while embracing our artistic input. This allowed us to achieve a strong collaborative process that resulted in two distinct performances (September 2023 and January 2024.)

In the latter, I contributed with a monologue of Isabelle Adjani’s character(s) in Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 film, Possession — a nod to Serpas’ references to horror cinema which have influenced her career as much as mine. The recital turned into a symphony of improvised vocals that progressed in tandem with Serpas’ unpredictable deejay set and the volatile installation assemblage by the other performers.

Collectively, we reached a glorious chaos as I adorned the destruction of the set with a soundscape of looped wailing, howls and chants.
